A Capitol Jazz Institution

The DC Jazz Festival stands as one of the nation's leading celebrations of jazz music and culture. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit service organization, the festival presents not just performances but a comprehensive programming initiative that includes the DC JazzFest main event, the prestigious DCJazzPrix competition, extensive education initiatives, the JazzDC ensemble, and the distinguished Embassy Series. Since its founding, the festival has attracted musicians of international acclaim and fostered deep community connections through jazz.

The 2026 Edition: September at The Wharf

The 2026 DC Jazz Festival takes place September 5-6 at The Wharf, Washington's dynamic waterfront destination along the Potomac River. The festival transforms multiple venues across the district—from the ticketed performance stages at District Pier, Arena Stage, and Union Stage to the free outdoor promenade along Wharf Street. Performances run from noon through 10 PM, making the festival accessible across the entire day. The Anthem also hosts exclusive programming on Friday, September 4, featuring the Embassy Series.

World-Class Lineup and Artistic Direction

The 2026 festival features internationally renowned artists including Dee Dee Bridgewater Quartet, Joshua Redman, Kurt Elling, and Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles. The festival maintains its commitment to emerging talent through the DCJazzPrix Finals and Artist-in-Residence programs. Notable residents include NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter (described as a "3-time Grammy winner and 5-time nominee" with a Guinness World Record as the most recorded bassist in music history) and local Washington talent like Corcoran Holt, a Duke Ellington School of the Arts graduate now teaching at Arizona State University.

Accessibility and Visitor Experience

The Wharf location provides extensive accessibility and convenience. The festival is easily reached via WMATA Metro (Waterfront Station on the Green Line or L'Enfant Plaza on multiple lines), with a free Southwest Shuttle operating every 10 minutes. Bike-share stations and multiple parking garages support various transportation preferences. The venue features ADA-accessible seating and welcomes families. Beyond the music, visitors can access over 50 restaurants and bars throughout the property, creating a complete festival experience. Free performances on Wharf Street promenade offer access to world-class jazz without a ticket, embodying the festival's mission to make jazz culturally central in Washington.

Mission and Support

The DC Jazz Festival is supported by the District of Columbia government, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mellon Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Beyond performances, the organization operates extensive education programs—DC JazzBops, Jazzin' InSchool, Jazzin' AfterSchool, and Meet the Artist—ensuring jazz reaches students and communities across the region. For information, contact the festival hotline at 855-332-7767.
