The Birth of a Bluegrass Legacy

In the early 1970s, two friends from northern Kentucky—Al Taylor and Sam Karr—discovered J.D. Crowe and the New South, a band featuring Tony Rice on guitar and Ricky Skaggs on mandolin. In 1974, they brought their young sons to the inaugural Festival of the Bluegrass in Lexington. When the children got lost in the crowd, their fathers improvised a solution: white towels worn on their heads. The boys later adapted the idea, tying white towel strips around their heads instead. "There go them ol' Ragheads," someone called out, and the name stuck.

More than 50 years later, the Ragheads have become "the original community of bluegrass music followers with international representation and thousands of members from every walk of life." They are young and old, rich and poor, men and women—united by respect for bluegrass music and its ability to tell stories about love, sorrow, struggle, spirit, and perseverance. At bluegrass festivals across the country, Ragheads remain easily recognizable with their signature white towel strips. But the towel represents far more than fandom; it symbolizes family and belonging within a bluegrass community that continues to grow.

A Festival Rooted in Community Partnership

Spirit in the Bluegrass Music Fest represents a collaborative approach to music festival production in central Kentucky. Rather than operating in isolation, the event actively partners with regional businesses, tourism organizations, and service providers who collectively believe in the cultural and economic value of live music. The festival operates under SamJam Promotions LLC and draws support from an extensive network including Garage Beer (partly owned by NFL brothers Jason and Travis Kelce), Sound Biscuit Productions (a Grammy Award-nominated recording studio), and T-Fiber Internet. Local partners such as Georgetown/Scott County Tourism, The Burl (a Lexington music venue housed in a historic 1926 Texaco Oil building), and 96.1 Hound FM provide additional backing.

Organizers actively encourage attendees to support the businesses that support bluegrass music, positioning the festival not merely as entertainment but as an economic driver for the region.
