A Northwest Bluegrass Tradition

Nestled in ponderosa pines on the shores of Medical Lake, the Blue Waters Bluegrass Festival has anchored the Pacific Northwest's summer music calendar since 2002. Each August, the festival brings touring headliners and celebrated regional acts to a scenic waterfront setting just 15 minutes west of Spokane, creating what organizers describe as "quite possibly the best summertime bluegrass experience in the Northwest."

The 2026 Lineup

The 2026 edition features an eclectic mix of established and emerging acts. Chris Jones & the Night Drivers—fronted by a vocalist Steve Martin calls one of "the great masters"—anchor the bill alongside Vickie Vaughn, the three-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year and former member of Grammy-nominated Della Mae. The lineup also includes Brooklyn-based Damn Tall Buildings, known for blending bluegrass with swing and jazz influences; Tall Poppy String Band, an old-time trio from Portland challenging traditional instrumentation; and Release the Squirrels, a Montana quintet formed in 2024 combining danceable originals with reimagined bluegrass classics.

Local and emerging talent rounds out the schedule: Shiloh Mountain Band, a trio of teenagers from the region; The Full House Band, a high-energy folk ensemble; and Poor Boy's Delight, a longtime jam-session collective now operating as a duo with guest musicians.

Festival Experience

Beyond main-stage performances, Blue Waters offers a Junior Workshop for musicians 20 and under, featuring instruction on bluegrass fundamentals and a Saturday showcase performance. Camping is available in two areas—RVs in upper dry camping and tents in lower camping—with parking and festival grounds shaded by towering pines. The site temperature typically reaches the 80s and low 90s during the day with cool evenings. Vendors operate food and craft booths outside the festival fence, and an open-mic slot on Friday welcomes additional performers.

Attendance & Community

The festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run entirely by volunteers. Children under 12 attend free with a parent, reinforcing its family-inclusive mission. Located about 3.5 hours east of Seattle and 15 minutes west of Spokane, Medical Lake sits on the dry side of the Cascades, offering predictable summer weather that has made the region's festival season a draw for musicians and fans across the Pacific Northwest.
