A Reggae Institution in Western Canada

The Calgary Reggae Festival has been building community around reggae music and culture since 2003, when six passionate Calgarians united around a singular vision: to elevate awareness of reggae in Western Canada. What began as a grassroots effort has evolved into an established presence in the city's music landscape, with the Calgary Reggae Festival Society (CRFS) now serving as the organization behind the movement.

Mission and Cultural Impact

CRFS operates from a clear mission: to promote local, regional and national awareness of reggae music in Canada. The organization has gained recognition for its efforts, winning the Community Service Award at the 2016 Obsidian Awards and the 2010 Reggae Music Achievement Award for Best Concert Promoter, awarded at a ceremony in Toronto. These accolades reflect the society's commitment to elevating reggae's profile across the country.

The 2026 Festival Experience

CalgarY ReggaeFest 2026 takes place August 28-29 at The Rise on St. Patrick's Island in Calgary's East Village. The festival welcomes families and all ages to experience performances from international reggae artists, Canadian musicians, and local performers. Gates open at 4:00 PM on Friday and 2:00 PM on Saturday, with shows running until 9:30 PM both nights. Beyond music, the festival offers food vendors, beer and soda stands, a dance floor, and merchandise from local artisans.

Education and Community Engagement

Beyond annual festival events, the organization runs the Reggae Lunch'n'Learn program, an interactive educational initiative available to groups and organizations. The 30- to 45-minute presentations explore topics including reggae's history and evolution, its influence on other genres, the Canadian reggae scene, and cultural connections to Rastafarianism and Jamaica. The program offers flexible content choices and is available as a donation-based service.

Artist-Friendly Approach

The festival gives equal billing to all performers and welcomes solo artists willing to work with the house band as well as full reggae bands with original material. Professional sound and lighting are provided at both indoor and outdoor venues, with performance sets ranging from 20 to 90 minutes. The festival provides backline equipment, professional sound engineering support, and negotiates compensation on a package basis inclusive of performance fees and per diem.
