A Quarter-Century of Alternative Music

Envol et Macadam stands as Quebec's pioneering alternative music festival, born in 1996 and now celebrating its 29th edition. What began as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a cornerstone event of the provincial music calendar, held annually in the heart of downtown Quebec City during the back-to-school season. The festival has earned recognition as a finalist for the Prix d'excellence des arts de la culture de la ville de Québec in 2011 and a regional winner of the 2010 Grands Prix du tourisme for the best cultural event in the Quebec region. In 2025, the festival received a nomination in the Festival of the Year category at the GAMIQ, underscoring its significance in Canada's cultural landscape.

Scale and Scope

The festival operates across seven outdoor and indoor venues throughout Quebec City, creating an immersive multi-site experience. Across three intense days (September 10-12, 2026), attendees can explore several dozen concerts featuring over 250 musicians. The diverse venue configuration—ranging from the outdoor Agora du Vieux-Port, an amphitheater in the Old Port, to intimate indoor spaces like Scanner Bistro and La Source de la Martinière—ensures multiple performance atmospheres within a single event.

International Roster and Heritage

Over its 29-year history, the festival has showcased nearly a thousand musical groups from Quebec, Canada, and approximately 20 countries. The 2026 lineup represents this international breadth: Bad Religion, Hatebreed, Despised Icon, Satanic Surfers, Guttermouth, and Orloge Simard headline the announced acts, alongside dozens of additional performers including A Wilhelm Scream, Death By Stereo, Les Goules, Mute, Teenage Bottlerocket, and many others. Past editions have featured artists ranging from punk pioneers (NOFX, Pennywise) to metal acts (Mastodon, Parkway Drive), electronic pioneers (Infected Mushroom), and breakout Canadian acts (Alexisonfire, Bloc Party collaborators, and emerging bands from the local scene).

Programming Philosophy

Envol et Macadam's mission centers on discovering and elevating emerging rock, punk, metal, and hardcore artists. The festival operates as a companion event to Planetrox, a European initiative that identifies and showcases the best emerging artists in these genres across the continent. This commitment to emerging talent complements the festival's headliner draws, creating a balanced programming approach that honors both established acts and rising talent.

Community and Industry Support

The festival benefits from nearly 50 private and public partners, including the City of Quebec, the Government of Quebec, and the Government of Canada. This broad institutional support reflects the festival's cultural importance to the region and its role as a vehicle for both tourism and local artistic development. The festival held a special showcase role during Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations in 2008, further cementing its status as a signature cultural event.
