A Midwest Tradition of International Folk Dance

The Madison Folk Ball stands as the largest and liveliest public participation folk dance festival in the Midwest, celebrating its thirty-sixth edition in 2026. Held at the University of Wisconsin's historic Memorial Union on January 23-24, the festival draws approximately 500 participants—a mix of experienced folk dancers, local ethnic music fans, students from the university community, and dancers traveling from across the region including Milwaukee, Chicago, the Twin Cities, Eau Claire, and beyond.

The Festival Experience

Folk Ball operates in the spirit of folk arts with all festival events structured for participation rather than performance or demonstration. Two full evening dance parties on Friday and Saturday feature eight regional bands including Orchestar Bez Ime, Sloboda, Szaszka, Yid Vicious Klezmer, DB Polka Express, IZVOR Orchestra, Bulgarika, and Rare Privilege. The festival's central focus is on Eastern European traditions that are rarely offered a public venue, though a variety of traditions are always represented.

Saturday offerings span the full day. Morning and afternoon workshops are held throughout the Memorial Union, taught by respected instructors in various folk dance traditions. Lee Otterholt covers Balkans and Beyond, Bob Walser teaches BalFolk traditions, and Mady Newfield leads English Country dancing. Additionally, a Saturday afternoon Hungarian Táncház session features music by Szaszka, and a singing workshop is taught by Natalie Nowytski. The 4th Floor Ballroom, the main dance floor, hosts performances with professional sound engineering provided by Lonya Nenashev of Red Square Audio.

Community and Access

The Folk Ball's free admission and emphasis on community participation make it uniquely accessible. Donations of any size are welcomed, supporting the festival's continuation. The event is sponsored by the Wisconsin Folk Arts Association and organized through the National Folk Organization (NFO), which promotes advancement and sharing of cultural traditions to keep them alive as treasures for the world. The nearby Terrace overlooking Lake Mendota on the north side of the building provides a popular outdoor space, making the Memorial Union venue itself part of the experience.
