A Celebration of Diversity and Culture

JAMBANA One World Festival stands as Canada's premier multicultural gathering, a day-long celebration rooted in the rhythms, flavors, and visual artistry of African and Caribbean culture. Held annually on Emancipation Day in Brampton, Ontario, this free festival draws families and music lovers to experience performances by internationally acclaimed artists, JUNO Award winners, and diverse cultural practitioners.

From Reggae Roots to Multicultural Movement

The festival's lineage stretches back to 1987, when Jones & Jones Productions founders Denise Jones and Allan Bucka Jones launched "Reggae On Yah," an all-night reggae concert at Toronto's Great Hall. This laid the groundwork for "Reggaebana," which debuted in 1993 to infuse reggae music into Toronto's summer festival landscape. Early editions featured legendary artists including Culture, Leroy Sibbles, and Willie Williams, and the festival expanded to include major reggae performers like Shaggy, Beenie Man, and Bounty Killer over subsequent years.

The transformation into JAMBANA occurred in the 2000s. Jones & Jones began producing Air Jamaica Day in 2005, an event that grew from 1,000 attendees at a Toronto parking lot to 20,000 visitors at the Powerade Centre in Brampton by 2007. The first official JAMBANA, presented by Air Jamaica, launched at Downsview Park on August 3, 2009, drawing over 45,000 attendees. Since then, the festival has evolved to represent Canada's growing cultural diversity far beyond reggae, celebrating the country's African and Caribbean communities through music, food, visual arts, and crafts.

What to Expect

The 2026 edition runs from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Brampton Sports Park's Kabbadi Field. Admission is free. The festival accommodates vendors across multiple categories—food, arts and crafts, health, travel and trade, and non-profit organizations—with vendor registration opening May 11, 2026. Attendees can expect music performances, Caribbean cuisine, family-friendly activities, and marketplace shopping. The site notes that photography and videography occur throughout the event, with entry constituting consent to being recorded.

Cultural Significance and Legacy

According to festival organizers, JAMBANA has "grown out of years of world class concerts, theatrical productions and festivals," reflecting the Jones & Jones team's decades-long commitment to celebrating Canadian cultural expression. The festival now represents a confluence of Caribbean and African artistic traditions, positioning Brampton as a hub for this multicultural celebration during the Caribana season.
