The Roots Picnic represents Philadelphia's definitive celebration of hip-hop and R&B music, curated annually by The Roots—the city's most influential hip-hop group. The festival combines what organizers describe as day parties and long nights out, family reunions and block parties, all centered on singing, dancing, and vibing with favorite people.

Founded in 2008 as the "Roots Family Picnic," the event debuted at Festival Pier on the banks of the Delaware River—headlined that first year by Gnarls Barkley—and has grown steadily into one of the country's premier celebrations of Black music and culture. It was conceived by The Roots, led by rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, alongside the group's late longtime manager Rich Nichols and co-founder Shawn Gee, now president of Live Nation Urban, whose 2017 partnership with Live Nation helped expand the festival's scope. From the outset the founders envisioned a deliberately multi-genre "melting pot"—spanning hip-hop, neo-soul, R&B, soul, rock, jazz, and funk—built as a Black-centered gathering in a festival landscape that offered few. The 2026 edition marks the festival's 18th year.

Belmont Plateau holds deep cultural significance within Philadelphia hip-hop history. The venue was referenced by Will Smith in his iconic track as a place where everybody goes, establishing it as a legendary gathering spot for the city's hip-hop community. After several years at the Mann Center (its home since 2019), the 2026 edition relocated to the roughly 70-acre Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park for the first time—a move that addressed the entry and infrastructure problems of prior years and expanded capacity to about 40,000 attendees per day, some 10,000 more than the Mann's peak. An estimated 80,000 people attended across the two-day weekend.

The 2026 lineup celebrates major musical anniversaries and milestones. Jay-Z headlines marking three decades since his landmark 1996 album Reasonable Doubt, while the festival honors go-go music's 50th anniversary and the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack's 30th anniversary. The headlining pairing of Jay-Z with Erykah Badu represents their first collaboration with The Roots since their celebrated 2001 MTV Unplugged performance, a historically significant musical moment. Jay-Z's Saturday set—his first festival headline appearance in years—featured a State Property reunion and Philadelphia guests including Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan, and Bilal, while Erykah Badu closed the festival on Sunday alongside The Roots' Black Thought.

Beyond the main stage performances, the festival provides a comprehensive cultural experience. Curated food vendors emphasizing Black-owned businesses offer diverse culinary options alongside DJ sets, brand experience activations, and vendor villages. The 2026 edition introduces improved infrastructure including an enhanced mobile app, expanded customer service, and reimagined VIP amenities designed to enhance attendee experience across two festival entrances. The festival's community mission extends beyond music through Roots Picnic Con, a companion conference held the day before the festival—in its fourth year in 2026—that convenes panels on literacy advocacy, financial literacy, technology, and civic engagement in partnership with organizations such as the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation.

Once a single Philadelphia gathering, The Roots Picnic has expanded into a touring cultural brand, with editions beyond its home city—including Los Angeles—and its first-ever international edition, Roots Picnic London, staged at the historic Crystal Palace Bowl on August 8–9, 2026 and headlined by Nas & The Roots. Even as the brand grows across the United States and United Kingdom, its organizers emphasize that Philadelphia remains its core.
