A 45-Year Commitment to Free Classical Music

Basically Beethoven, operating as Fine Arts Chamber Players (FACP), has been enriching North Texas through free classical music performances and education for over 45 years. Founded in 1981 by Rogene Russell and Charles Price in collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the organization has served over 250,000 children through educational programs and performed for more than 564,000 North Texas residents—all free of charge.

The flagship Basically Beethoven Festival began in 1981 as Dallas' premier summer chamber music festival, establishing a tradition of accessible, high-quality performances. After the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts relocated to the Arts District in 1984, FACP launched the Bancroft Family Concerts at the Dallas Museum of Art's Horchow Auditorium, and later renamed this winter series as Hallam Family Concerts, which became the Basically Beethoven Hallam Concerts.

Two Concert Series for Year-Round Music

The 2025-2026 season includes seven free Hallam Concerts held on Saturday afternoons at 3pm from October through May (excluding December) at Central Commons, and three Festival concerts held on Sundays at 2:30pm in July at Moody Performance Hall. Each Festival concert features a two-part structure: pre-professional rising stars perform for 20-25 minutes, followed by a short break and performances by established featured musicians. Hallam Concerts typically run 60-90 minutes without intermission, while Festival concerts run 1.5-2 hours with a 5-10 minute break. Both venues are ADA-compliant, welcoming audiences regardless of their classical music familiarity.

Education and Community Impact

Educational initiatives began in 1989 with Dream Collectors, an interactive performing troupe integrating subjects like dyslexia, character education, math, and science. This success led to additional programs: Music A to Z, Masterclasses, and Music Residencies providing free professional instruction in piano, violin, and voice. All educational programs are TEKS-compliant and offered completely free to students and schools lacking robust music programs.

Supported and Sustainable

Basically Beethoven is supported by grants from Capital One, Fanchon & Howard Hallam, The City of Dallas Office of Arts & Culture, TACA, Texas Commission on the Arts, Ben E. Keith Company, DART, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Moody Fund for the Arts, along with individual donations. The organization operates with a dedicated skeleton crew and extensive collaboration with other artists and nonprofits to fulfill its mission of bringing professional classical music to all Dallas residents.
