The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation has operated for over 40 years, celebrating Detroit's rich history of jazz music through year-round concerts and educational programming, culminating in the world's largest free jazz festival. Held annually over Labor Day weekend at Hart Plaza, the festival features more than 60 performances by world-class jazz artists and hosts spontaneous late-night jam sessions that have become legendary.

Founded in 1980 by Robert McCabe and the Detroit Renaissance, the festival flourished through a partnership with Montreux Jazz Festival until 1991. It subsequently relocated to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts before returning to Hart Plaza in 2005. Detroit philanthropist Gretchen Valade has been instrumental in the festival's growth, establishing a significant endowment that enabled the festival's expansion to cover three blocks of Hart Plaza with multiple dedicated stages and enhanced amenities for food vendors and attendees.

The 2026 edition marks the introduction of Grammy-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano as the Artist-in-Residence, recognizing his status as a "Titan in Jazz" for his fearless approach to artistic innovation. Lovano has won a Grammy Award for his album 52nd Street Themes and received 14 additional Grammy nominations, along with numerous DownBeat Critics and Readers Poll awards.

Beyond the main festival weekend, the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation provides year-round programming including Jazz From the Cellar performances, monthly JazzChat LIVE sessions, and competitive educational programs such as the Collegiate Combo Competition, Youth Vocal Jazz Competition, and Jazz Goes to College scholarship initiative. The festival maintains its commitment to accessibility through free admission while offering VIP experience packages for those seeking enhanced benefits. Professional artists are invited to submit materials for paid performance consideration.

As the foundation's mission states, it celebrates Detroit's position as a major jazz city while providing opportunities for regional students and aspiring musicians to achieve artistic excellence.
