A Ten-Day Jazz Celebration in Canada

The Edmonton International Jazz Festival stands as one of Canada's premier jazz events, drawing world-class musicians and passionate audiences to Alberta's capital each June. Presented by TD Ready Commitment, the festival spans ten days and offers an immersive experience into jazz music across multiple performance formats and venues.

From Jazz City to International Recognition

Edmonton's jazz tradition began in 1980 with Jazz City, a beloved annual event that operated for nearly 25 years. When that era ended, a dedicated group of music lovers recognized what the city would lose. In fall 2005, they formed the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society (EJFS), a not-for-profit organization with a simple mission: ensure jazz would continue to thrive in Edmonton. Led by founder Kent Sangster, the society organized its inaugural Edmonton International Jazz Festival in June 2006, launching what would become a defining cultural institution.

The festival's growth was rapid. By 2006, the newly established Edmonton Jazz Festival Society partnered with the Edmonton Arts Council and Alberta Foundation for the Arts to expand the program. That year brought the debut of the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble of local musicians dedicated to composing, arranging, and performing work that honors jazz tradition while defining what the genre means in an Edmonton context.

The 2026 Festival Experience

For 2026 (June 19–28), the festival centers around a nightly performance series at Yardbird Suite at 7:00 PM, featuring ensembles from Vancouver keyboardist MA:Q's modern jazz-funk fusion to the Charley Rose Trio's cinematic avant-garde approach, Hungarian world fusion act Djabe, and pianist Jean-Michel Pilc. The collective vision spans genre-defying jazz—the Ostara Project showcases award-winning Canadian women in jazz, while ensembles like the Jacob Do Octet blend rich textures and dynamic improvisation into storytelling in motion.

Beyond the daily Yardbird series, the festival activates major cultural venues. Japanese jazz piano phenomenon Hiromi Uehara takes the Winspear Centre stage as the marquee headliner, a venue celebrated as world-renowned. Described as erasing the lines between jazz and classical, composition and improvisation, Uehara's Sonicwonderland project marks her heaviest, funkiest album yet, showcasing her electronic side through extensive use of Nord analog keyboards. The Starlite Room hosts indie-soul explorer Shebad and Montreal's HighSoul pioneers GeminiCrab, while JazzClub at Chateau Lacombe presents intimate performances by Grammy-nominated guitarist Raul Midón, saxophonist Isaiah Collier, and virtuoso guitarist Pasquale Grasso.

The festival closes with a special collaborative matinee—"A Swingin' Affair: EJO Meets ESO"—bringing the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra together with three-time JUNO Award winner Caity Gyorgy, combining 30+ musicians in a family-friendly celebration of jazz standards and orchestral arrangements.

Growing the Scene

Over its first five years, the festival expanded significantly. The EJFS acquired the Jazzworks Non-Competitive Band Festival, creating a dedicated peer experience for junior and senior high school musicians. The organization earned charitable status in 2011, formalizing its place as a permanent community pillar. Today, the society continues to produce not only the international festival but also the Edmonton Jazz Collective and Jazz Around Town initiatives that bring jazz to diverse audiences across the city.

The festival's reputation for attracting higher-profile international acts has grown steadily, built entirely on the dedication of its board members, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. The organization emphasizes accessibility, hosting performances that appeal to jazz enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels, whether through the main festival, youth-focused programming, or community performances.
