San Francisco's West Coast Jazz Institution

The Fillmore Jazz Festival stands as the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast, drawing thousands of music lovers to San Francisco's historic Fillmore District every Independence Day weekend. For 2026, the festival returns July 4-5, reclaiming the 12-block stretch along Fillmore Street from Jackson to Eddy where some of America's greatest jazz moments unfolded.

The festival runs from 10am to 6pm each day, creating an all-day celebration of music, art, and community. Multiple outdoor stages host performances ranging from classic big band music to contemporary jazz, Caribbean rhythms, blues, and Latin jazz. The California Stage, Sutter Street performances, Eddy Street Stage, and sanctuaries at Calvary Presbyterian and Jones Memorial United Methodist provide five distinct venues for performers.

A Neighborhood with Jazz Legacy

The Fillmore District's significance to American jazz runs deep. During World War II, dozens of jazz clubs lined Fillmore Street, hosting era-defining talent including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Billie Holliday. Celebrities like Joe Louis, Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, and Sammy Davis Jr. graced the audience at legendary venues like Jimbo's, where Louis Armstrong famously met Charlie Parker—the only known time they were under the same roof. Chet Baker slipped away from Fort Mason barracks to jam all night, while John Coltrane played Bop City with John Handy.

The 1960s brought new creative energy when jazz historian David Rosenbaum ran the Melrose Record shop on Fillmore, where young Maya Angelou worked. The Fillmore became a creative epicenter, home to Zen Buddhism's Western introduction and artists including Isaac Stern, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Allen Ginsberg.

After decades of decline, a 1980s renaissance sparked the neighborhood's next chapter. The first Fillmore Jazz Festival launched in 1986 through merchant association efforts, giving new voice to the storied district. By 1999, the festival had relocated to the newly revitalized Jazz Preservation District, where it continues to thrive.

2026 Performers and Community Celebration

The 2026 festival features both established Bay Area jazz figures and new talent. Ricardo Scales, the Jones Memorial Music Director and longtime Fillmore programming legend, shapes the festival's artistic vision. Performers include Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Contemporary Jazz Orchestra performing Miles Davis and John Coltrane classics, Roger Glenn Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the RealTime Collective featuring saxophonist Kristen Strom, pianist Tammy Hall, bassist Ruth Davies, and drummer Sylvia Cuenca. Caribbean All-Stars bring reggae and calypso traditions, while Mood Swing Orchestra revives 1930s and 1940s swing classics.

Beyond the stages, over 12 blocks showcase fine art and crafts alongside gourmet food and beverages reflecting diverse cuisines from Asian to Cajun. The festival operates as a free event made possible by sponsorship, with vendor registration open for 2026. A smoke-free event under San Francisco Health Code Article 19L, the Fillmore Jazz Festival remains deeply rooted in its neighborhood while welcoming visitors from across the region to celebrate the enduring power of jazz.
