A Festival Built on 46 Years of Jazz Excellence
The Ottawa Jazz Festival stands as one of Canada's most enduring celebrations of jazz artistry. Born in the summer of 1980 from the vision of local musicians Bob Misener, Tony Pope, and Bill Shuttleworth, what began as a weekend of outdoor jazz in Major's Hill Park has grown into a defining cultural event for the National Capital Region. For nearly five decades, the festival has earned its reputation by championing "layers of sound & history," programming that "richly underscores the continuing creativity and diversity of the artists and the music itself."
A Trailblazer in Jazz Programming
The festival's strength has always been its programming vision. In the early 1980s, the festival quickly attracted big names—Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Herb Ellis, Wynton Marsalis, and Milt Jackson performed in those foundational years. When Jacques Émond took the helm as Programming Manager in the mid-1980s, he shaped the festival's identity around an eclectic vision spanning big band music, West Coast jazz, and emerging talent. Émond became legendary for spotting artists before mainstream success: Diana Krall, D.D. Jackson, and Dave Douglas all appeared at the festival in their early careers.
By 1999, the festival achieved an international breakthrough when Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra drew a record-breaking 8,000 people. Two years later, in 2001, demand was so intense that Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra tickets sold out in 72 hours with another 8,000 in attendance. By 2010, the festival boasted "the largest loyal audience of its kind in eastern Ontario," having presented artists across the entire jazz spectrum—from traditional to avant-garde—including Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Roy Haynes, Branford Marsalis, and Béla Fleck.
Resilience and Modern Innovation
When COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 festival, the organization responded with characteristic innovation. A live-streamed initiative called Tenacity featured 85 artists across 12 free shows, keeping the community connected. As restrictions eased, the festival continued programming throughout 2021 both virtually and in-person, before returning to full live events at Confederation Park in 2022. By 2023–2024, attendance made a strong comeback, and the festival has continued to recover substantially each year.
The 2026 edition represents another creative evolution. The festival introduces the Elgin St. Stage, a second performance venue positioned between Elgin Street and the Lieutenant Colonel John By Fountain within Confederation Park. This expansion addresses a key friction point in traditional single-stage festival design, allowing attendees to move between performances without leaving the park grounds.
Pass Tiers and Access Philosophy
The reimagined ticketing structure reflects careful listening to attendee feedback. General Admission passes offer lawn-level access to all outdoor shows at an accessible entry point. Premium passes include elevated, covered lounge seating (redesigned with flexible seating, expanded bar service, and artisanal cocktails) alongside three National Arts Centre vouchers and early access to additional NAC show tickets. Youth passes (ages 13–25) provide 50% savings on standard GA pricing, removing financial barriers for younger festival-goers. VIP passes unlock unlimited National Arts Centre admission, guaranteed lounge access, meet-and-greet opportunities, merchandise, and a tax receipt.
A Canadian Spotlight
Throughout its history, the festival has remained committed to domestic talent, featuring approximately 300 Canadian artists in the lineup annually. This commitment reflects the festival's founding mission: to advance the appreciation of jazz by programming work that celebrates both continuing creativity and the diversity of artists.
For the 46th edition in 2026, the festival promises an electrifying lineup spanning jazz, soul, funk, and world music. Confirmed performers include Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, WILLOW, Ibrahim Maalouf, KOKOROKO, The Soul Rebels, Brad Mehldau, Wyclef Jean, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Takuya Kuroda. Running June 18–28 in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the festival continues a legacy of discovery, artistic risk-taking, and community celebration that has defined it for nearly half a century.
