Celebrating African Heritage Through Pinkster
Pinkster Jubilee 2026 honors a remarkable chapter in American colonial history—the transformation of a Dutch Pentecost celebration into an Afro-Dutch festival that became a week of rare freedom for enslaved people in New Netherland. Held at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers on May 16, 2026, this free all-day event weaves together music, dance, storytelling, and cultural remembrance to celebrate resilience, community, and the preservation of African culture in early America.
The Historical Significance of Pinkster
Pinkster—the Dutch name for Pentecost—originally marked a religious holiday and spring celebration when families traveled to visit relatives. In the colonial New Netherland, enslaved Africans transformed this observance into something profoundly different: a temporary window of freedom. During Pinkster week, enslaved people were permitted to travel, earn money, and gather in groups. This brief reprieve allowed them to reunite with separated family members, preserve and pass down cultural traditions to younger generations, and resist enslavement through collective celebration and expression. The festival became central to African-American life and identity in early New York.
A Full Day of Performance and Participation
Pinkster Jubilee 2026 opens with a Welcome & Libations ceremony at 11:00 AM, followed by a "Call to Jubilee" where all musicians jam together as a show of solidarity. The day features multiple simultaneous programming threads: Professora Coruja of Capoeria Luanda leads a capoeira workshop exploring Brazilian martial arts rooted in African resistance; Master Drummer Kofi Donkor invites participants to learn the rhythms of West African drums; and award-winning storyteller April Armstrong serves as the event's Griot (traditional keeper of history), sharing African fables and Pinkster history throughout the day. At 12:45 PM, oyster historian and entrepreneur Ben "Moody" Harney of Mother Shuckers presents a demonstration and history of oysters in New York and the legacy of Black oystermen, including the story of Thomas Downing, "the Oyster King of New York." At 3:30 PM, the highly skilled ensemble known as the Pinkster Players—led by percussionist Chief Baba Neil Clarke and including fiddler Enrique "Rique" Prince and multi-instrumentalist Ayodele Maakheru—perform "The Story of Pinkster," a theatrical blend of music, drama, and dance that brings the 18th-century celebration to vivid life. The day culminates in a Jubilee Parade at 4:30 PM, led by the Pinkster Players through the historic manor grounds.
Crafts, Vendors, and Community
Throughout the day, the Gothic Chamber hosts free craft activities where visitors can make paper flowers celebrating spring, weave kente wall hangings, and create Pinkster King crowns—connecting contemporary participants to historical Pinkster traditions. The grounds feature live music on the back porch, outdoor games of the 18th century, and vendors specializing in African and African-American art, books, gifts, and food, including A Little Bit of Love Beauty, Charnise Candles, Humble Bumble Books, and others. Museum admission is free all day, sponsored by Yonkers Arts Weekend.
Part of a Larger Cultural Weekend
Pinkster Jubilee 2026 coincides with Yonkers Arts Weekend, extending the celebration across the city and drawing broader audiences to both the festival and the wider Yonkers cultural landscape. The event is now in its fourth consecutive year at Philipse Manor Hall, reflecting growing community investment in remembering and honoring Pinkster's significance to Black New York history.
