POP Montreal: 25 Years of Championing Independent Arts

POP Montreal International Music Festival stands as one of Canada's most distinctive cultural celebrations, having evolved from a friend-driven initiative in 2002 into a major fixture in the Montreal festival circuit and international music scene. For its 2026 edition—marking 25 years of programming—the festival continues its core mission: championing independence in the arts by presenting emerging and celebrated artistic talent from around the world.

Beyond the headline musical performances, POP Montreal distinguishes itself through its multidisciplinary approach. The festival brings together music performances, visual art exhibitions, craft fairs, film screenings, symposium discussions, workshops, and community events, all designed to create what organizers describe as "meaningful and vibrant experiences in the city."

As a not-for-profit organization, the festival operates on a distinctive curation model: since its founding 23 years ago, music curators, musicians, and industry professionals have held listening sessions to vote on artist submissions year after year. This peer-driven approach shapes a significant portion of the festival's programming, ensuring that emerging talent receives serious consideration alongside established names.

Programming & Venues

The 2026 edition runs September 23–27 across multiple Montreal venues. Featured artists announced include Infinity Song, Plumbing, Mini Trees, Charlotte Cornfield, Luna, Uffie, CFCF, Sister Nancy, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Les Hay Babies, and Chad VanGaalen, among many others. The festival operates both indoor venues (Théâtre Rialto complex and La Sotterenea) and outdoor spaces on De Gaspé and the Rialto Rooftop.

Beyond the main festival, POP Montreal offers year-round programming through Marché des Possibles (an open-air urban marketplace running weekends June–August featuring food trucks, artisanal vendors, and free programming), Espace POP (a gallery space for local artist showcases), and Fringe POP (a curated 2-day stage at Montreal's St-Ambroise Fringe Fest). The festival also maintains a presence at major North American and international festivals including SXSW, Liverpool Sound City, and The Great Escape.

Commitment to Sustainability & Community

POP Montreal has implemented concrete environmental initiatives including a plastic bottle and straw ban at festival venues, compostable corn starch glasses, water fountains for refillable bottles, and partnerships with Consignaction and RECYC-QUÉBEC for waste management and education. The festival encourages mask-wearing in indoor venues and maintains accessibility features at its venues. With free and affordable events offered throughout its programming, POP Montreal remains committed to connecting audiences with diverse artistic voices.
