Toronto Summer Music: A Premier International Festival and Academy

Toronto Summer Music brings together accomplished and emerging classical musicians from across North America and Europe each summer for an intensive festival combining world-class performances with rigorous professional training and education. Running from July 9 through August 1, 2026, the festival operates under Artistic Director William Fedkenheuer, a celebrated Canadian violinist and two-time GRAMMY nominee. The festival features multiple distinct components: headline performances, the Emerging Artist Program Academy, and the Community Program for advanced amateurs.

Featured International Performers

The 2026 festival presents an impressive roster of internationally recognized musicians. Timothy Chooi, an internationally acclaimed violinist, performs on July 14 at Walter Hall, paired with pianist Jon Kimura Parker in works by Vitali, Gluck, Corigliano, and Franck. Two-time GRAMMY Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke returns with pianist Warren Jones on July 13 for "Of Thee I Sing," showcasing American composers including Copland, Barber, Weill, Sondheim, and Gershwin. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee, hailed by The New York Times as part of the bel canto repertory elite, participates in the festival lineup.

Inon Barnatan, called "one of the most admired pianists of his generation" by The New York Times, performs July 23 at Koerner Hall with an ambitious solo recital featuring J.S. Bach's Suite from Violin Partita No. 3 (arranged by Rachmaninoff), Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales, Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. On July 30, Élisabeth Pion, the 2025 Honens Gold Laureate pianist, and Emmanuel Ceysson, Los Angeles Philharmonic Principal Harp, perform with the TSM Festival Orchestra under conductor Ryan Haskins, presenting Renié's Harp Concerto in C minor and Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in G minor.

The Emerging Artist Program Academy

The centerpiece for emerging talent is the Emerging Artist Program, designed specifically for musicians aged 18 to 35 launching professional careers. The program operates two intensive streams: the Chamber Music Institute (July 6–August 1) for string players and pianists, and the Art of Song program (July 6–18) focused on vocal art song. Both are highly selective, with fellows chosen through rigorous international jury processes. Accepted fellows receive comprehensive support including full tuition fellowships, housing for non-local participants, and daily immersion in advanced training.

The Chamber Music Institute mentors include members of renowned ensembles like the Miró Quartet, Dover Quartet, and New Orford String Quartet, alongside acclaimed soloists such as Jennifer Frautschi and Orion Weiss. The Art of Song program features mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and pianists Steven Philcox and Warren Jones. Fellows engage in structured daily schedules combining one-on-one coaching, ensemble rehearsals, masterclasses, and workshops. Each fellow is assigned to six chamber ensembles: four "ReGeneration" groups featuring a mentor as an active ensemble member and two "Academy" groups coached by faculty. The Art of Song program pairs each singer with one pianist weekly and each pianist with two singers.

Community Program for Amateur Musicians

The Community Program welcomes advanced adult amateur musicians over 18 for an intensive week (July 27–August 1, 2026). Three distinct streams accommodate different instrumental traditions: Chamber Music for strings, winds, brass, and pianists; Chamber Choir with director Kathleen Allan; and Piano Masterclass with world-class mentor Ian Parker. Participants rehearse intensively with professional musicians, attend masterclasses and workshops, and perform at Festival concerts. Program fees are accessible: Chamber Music and Piano Masterclass cost CAD $1,000 plus HST, while Chamber Choir costs CAD $700 plus HST.

Educational Mission and Venues

All programs take place at the University of Toronto's Edward Johnson Building, home to a major music library, the Sniderman Recording Archives, and Walter Hall—described as "one of the city's major chamber music halls." Additional performances occur at Koerner Hall and Heliconian Hall, connecting participants and attendees to Toronto's concert infrastructure. The festival receives support from the Ontario Arts Council and Government of Ontario, alongside partnerships with major corporate sponsors including TD, BMO, RBC, PwC, and Stantec, and foundations such as Azrieli and Lewitt Family Foundation.
