Preserving East Austin's Blues Legacy

The Eastside Kings Festival celebrates one of Austin's most important but often overlooked musical traditions: the African American blues, jazz, and gospel heritage of the Rosewood area in East Austin. Founded in 1999 by bassist and producer Eddie Stout through Dialtone Records, the festival emerged from a simple but profound commitment—to honor and amplify the voices of largely unknown but exceptionally talented musicians who shaped the region's post-war blues and R&B scene.

A Festival Built on Cultural Preservation

Now in its 14th year, the Eastside Kings Festival spans two days and transforms historic East Austin into a multi-venue celebration. With six venues hosting over 24 bands, the festival provides critical exposure and economic opportunity for both established and emerging African American musicians. The event has earned recognition as a Best of Austin award-winning cultural preservation initiative, reflecting community acknowledgment of its importance.

The festival honors founders and influencers including Clarence Pierce, Willie Sampson, Donald 'Duck' Jennings, and Little Joe Washington—artists whose contributions to Texas blues remain largely unknown outside local circles. By curating lineups that showcase these traditions alongside contemporary performers, the festival bridges generations and ensures continuity of blues, jazz, and gospel traditions.

Supported by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department, the Eastside Kings Festival strengthens both cultural preservation and local economics.
