A Love Letter to Appalachian Roots in Northeast Ohio

Every February, when winter weighs heaviest on the Great Lakes region, the Lake Erie Folk Festival arrives as a celebration of traditional music that draws visitors from five counties and three states to Cleveland. Held on Valentine's Day at Case Western Reserve University, LEFF has become "Northeast Ohio's largest winter gathering of the region's traditional music community," according to the festival organizers. The event is created and produced by the Northeast Ohio Musical Heritage Association in partnership with WRUW-FM, grounding it in the region's deep commitment to grassroots musical preservation.

What Makes LEFF Stand Out

Unlike larger, ticket-centric festivals, LEFF prioritizes accessibility and participation. The daytime events run from 1:00 to 6:00 PM in Thwing Center and are entirely free and open to all. The festival features all-day jam sessions playing various traditional music styles, free community concerts throughout the afternoon, and a robust series of workshops tailored to "a wide range of musical interests." Young musicians and those new to folk music are explicitly welcomed, creating a learning environment rather than a passive concert experience.

The evening concert, held in CWRU's Harkness Chapel—described as "a space known for warm, intimate and acoustically resonant performances"—brings together diverse national and regional talent. The 2026 lineup includes award-winning banjo player Tray Wellington and his band, local figures David Mayfield and Paul Kovac, the Italian traditional music ensemble All Boara, blues and folk storyteller Afi Scruggs, and students of the Cleveland Institute of Music. Tickets for the evening concert are available through the festival website, with space noted as limited.

New Directions for 2026

The festival is expanding to a two-day event for the first time, adding a Friday night swing dance opening in partnership with WRUW and CWRU's student Swing Dance and Jazz ensembles. Like all LEFF events, the emphasis remains on inclusivity—"dancers of all abilities should feel welcome to join."

For those seeking live music that prioritizes community over spectacle, or musicians wanting to connect with peers, Lake Erie Folk Festival offers a winter respite rooted in the region's commitment to traditional music.
