Cleveland's Premier Jazz Festival Returns for Its 47th Year

Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland stands as one of the region's most celebrated cultural events, returning June 25-27, 2026 for its 47th edition. Presented by KeyBank and hosted at Playhouse Square, the festival brings together nearly 500 artists across indoor theaters and outdoor stages. Founded in 1980, the festival has evolved into far more than a weekend concert series—it operates year-round as an educational organization deeply committed to advancing jazz as an art form and fostering the next generation of musicians in Northeast Ohio.

A Three-Day Celebration Across Multiple Venues

Playhouse Square serves as the festival's heart, hosting performances in its historic theaters including Key Bank State Theatre, Hanna Theatre, and Mimi Ohio Theatre. Indoor concerts feature world-class talent on ticketed stages, while the outdoor programming—staged under Playhouse Square's iconic GE Chandelier—offers completely free admission and all-ages access. This dual model ensures accessibility across economic backgrounds while maintaining production quality for headline performances.

The 2026 Lineup: Legends and Innovators

The indoor lineup brings together established jazz masters and genre-expanding voices. Sheila E., the "Queen of Percussion," headlines the opening night, her decades-long career shaped by collaborations with Prince and her distinctive blend of jazz, R&B, and Latin influences. Spyro Gyra returns with nearly 50 years of touring experience and over 10,000 performances across six continents. Kurt Elling, whom The New York Times calls "the standout male jazz vocalist of our time," performs alongside legendary pianist Fred Hersch, whose trio was voted the No. 1 Jazz Group in the 2019 DownBeat Critics Poll. Bassist Ron Carter, holder of a Guinness World Record for most recording credits by a jazz musician with over 2,200 sessions, leads his Foursight Quartet. Dominick Farinacci, a Cleveland native who received the city's Cleveland Arts Prize in 2022, also directs the Tri-C JazzFest Academy and emphasizes mentorship alongside performance excellence. Emerging voices include Durand Bernarr, a Grammy Award winner for Best Progressive R&B Album, Laurin Talese, winner of the 2018 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, and MonoNeon, one of the last musicians to collaborate with Prince, continuing that legacy with Grammy-winning avant-garde bass work. The festival closes with the Ohio Players, funk legends whose infectious energy bridges generations.

The Outdoor Experience: Genre-Bending and Free

Outdoor performances span Friday and Saturday evenings with performances beginning mid-afternoon. The bill weaves tap dance, Afrobeat, funk, Latin jazz, soul, and world percussion into a coherent musical journey. Savion Glover, a Tony Award-winning tap dancer whose career spans decades of self-expression through rhythm and movement, shares the stage with Tito Puente Jr. and Nestor Torres, carriers of Latin jazz tradition. Weedie Braimah and Hands of Time blend African folk rhythms with modern ensemble settings; their debut album was named to Time magazine's Top 10 Albums of the year and earned two Grammy nominations. Local ensemble Hubb's Groove, named Best Jazz Band at the Cleveland Music Awards for three consecutive years, opens for headliner Durand Bernarr. LoConti, a seven-piece Cleveland rock and funk band that earned Best New Artist honors at the 2023 Cleveland Music Awards, brings contemporary energy. This approach—treating outdoor performances as public cultural space rather than ticketed entertainment—positions Tri-C JazzFest as a community resource.

Beyond the Stages

The festival extends well past headline performances. Attendees can visit a talk tent to meet artists directly, watch live cooking demonstrations at the Jazz Kitchen, browse marketplace vendors, enjoy food trucks and a beer garden, and encounter street performers throughout Playhouse Square. This ecosystem creates multiple entry points for different audiences and budgets, making the festival accessible to longtime jazz devotees and curious newcomers alike.

Educational Mission at the Core

What truly distinguishes Tri-C JazzFest from commercial music events is its year-round commitment to music education and community engagement. The summer festival functions as a visible manifestation of a deeper mission: connecting students of all ages with working jazz professionals, fostering the development of Northeast Ohio's next generation of musicians, and providing free cultural access to underserved communities. The Tri-C JazzFest Academy, directed by Dominick Farinacci, ensures that younger artists and students have real relationships with accomplished professionals—not as distant celebrities but as mentors and collaborators.
