A Canadian Institution Celebrating 45+ Years of Music

Since its founding in 1980 as a modest two-day affair on three stages, the Calgary Folk Music Festival has grown into "one of Canada's flagship, trailblazing music festivals." What began as a regional gathering has evolved into a four-day extravaganza drawing performers and audiences from across North America and beyond. The 2026 edition, running July 23–26, continues this tradition with 65+ artists performing on seven stages.

Programming Beyond Folk

Despite its name, the festival's "broad, cutting-edge programming" spans far beyond traditional folk music. The lineup includes "folk to funk to global sounds and fresh hip hop," reflecting how the festival has expanded its sonic palette while maintaining its roots-music foundation. The festival structure includes both traditional concerts and collaborative sessions, allowing for unexpected musical intersections and cross-genre explorations.

Year-Round Cultural Presence

The Calgary Folk Music Festival extends beyond its summer event. Block Heater, the festival's winter celebration, returned in 2026 with a new format, hosting performances across heated tents and indoor stages at The Confluence where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet. The festival also operates Festival Hall in Calgary's historic Inglewood neighborhood, a rental venue hosting concerts, markets, fashion events, and talks throughout the year, anchoring the organization's presence in the community.
